Trauma-related complaints

When someone has gone through a shocking and drastic experience (accident, robbery, sexual violence, war), this can leave so-called internal “wounds”. Often someone does not feel safe despite the event being in the past. People often have recurring dreams, nightmares and intrusive thoughts. It can feel as if the traumatic event is re-experienced over and over again.

Often for these reasons, a person avoids situations, people and places that remind them of the traumatic experience. Some try to numb the overwhelming emotions by using alcohol and/or drugs.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can affect anyone and
often interferes with normal daily functioning. PTSD manifests itself in various physical and psychological complaints.

Do you recognize yourself in the above? A general practitioner and/or psychologist can provide further explanation about PTSD and what the options for treatment are.
