Anxiety

Anxiety

Everyone feels scared from time to time. Fortunately, because fear warns us against danger. For example, you are started if you smell a burning smell. Your body is getting ready to take action in order for you to quickly put out the fire or escape, if necessary. This is a healthy response.

But what if you feel anxious in situations where everyone actually agrees that there is no real danger and or threat? For example, when you are having a conversation or when you are alone outside. Or you are constantly terribly worried about anything and everything. Then this fear can get in your way.

If you regularly suffer from various characteristics of anxiety that cause problems in your daily life or at work, you may have an anxiety disorder. The diagnosis is made by a qualified practitioner, such as a mental health psychologist or psychiatrist.

Negative self-image

Negative self-image

Do you constant worry about and/or find it important how others think about you? Are you often self-critical and constantly looking for approval and connection? Are you frequently afraid of rejection?

A negative self-image often arises from a lack of safety, appreciation and connection. When you have a negative self-image, you often have negative thoughts and feelings about your performance. In that perspective, others are always better, the things that go less well receive more attention than the things that go well and you are very sensitive to criticism from others – because what you want is confirmation.

It can feel paralyzing to constantly try to keep this up. This can lead to experiencing psychological complaints. For example, someone may develop eating problems, become fearful of failure and increasingly withdraw from social contacts and work. This, in turn, can lead to feelings of depression.

Do you recognize this, and would you like to work on improving your self-confidence? A psychologist can help you through cognitive behavioral therapy.

Trauma

Trauma-related complaints

When someone has gone through a shocking and drastic experience (accident, robbery, sexual violence, war), this can leave so-called internal “wounds”. Often someone does not feel safe despite the event being in the past. People often have recurring dreams, nightmares and intrusive thoughts. It can feel as if the traumatic event is re-experienced over and over again.

Often for these reasons, a person avoids situations, people and places that remind them of the traumatic experience. Some try to numb the overwhelming emotions by using alcohol and/or drugs.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can affect anyone and
often interferes with normal daily functioning. PTSD manifests itself in various physical and psychological complaints.

Do you recognize yourself in the above? A general practitioner and/or psychologist can provide further explanation about PTSD and what the options for treatment are.

Life phase problems

Life phase problems

Every stage in a person’s life is characterized by certain expectations. Society plays an ever  growing role in this. Expectations, and whether or not you meet them, can cause a lot of  pressure, dissatisfaction, doubt and uncertainty.

Think of specific periods in which a lot has  changed, for example puberty, studying, living independently, having children, children start  to lead their own lives, retire and grow older. All of this requires a lot of resilience.

You can  find yourself in situations where you struggle feeling a sense of self, self-worth, you no longer  have clear what you stand for, what you want, what feels good and what does not feel good  and what your opinion is. This can make you feel a lack of belonging, insecure and too  dependent on others. For others, having to grow up between two cultures can make it difficult  finding a sense of self and balance.

In both cases, a psychologist can help further clarify
what you want to achieve, what you stand for and how to give direction to life again.

Depression

Depression

Everyone feels down from time to time. Usually that feeling disappears by itself. Depression is different. The negative feelings are still there. The gloom you feel is much more intense and will persist. Nobody can cheer you up, nothing interests you anymore. You feel empty, worthless, guilty and lifeless. You feel tired and as if a kind of gray cloud has fallen over you, so things no longer touch you. You keep overthinking. You often feel anxious or tense without knowing why.

At a certain point you find yourself no longer able to function properly in your work or study. With a depression you feel depressed for more than 2 weeks and/or you do not feel like doing anything.

If the depression is severe or does not go away, it is probably best to consult a psychologist (and consider medication).

Stress complaints

Stress complaints

With prolonged stress, the balance between capacity and burden is disrupted and stress-related complaints can occur. These complaints can manifest themselves physically, emotionally or in behavior.

If not acted on time, the signals can lead to chronic complaints: burnout, chronic fatigue, tension problems, anxiety disorders, stomach and intestinal problems, neck and shoulder complaints, nervousness and depression. You may also feel
less focused, easily emotional and irritable.

Stress-related complaints usually do not disappear by themselves, you must actively do something about it. A doctor and / or
psychologist can help advice you on which guidance is necessary in order for you to experience peace and harmony again.
